I dare say that catfish is one of the most popular spring and summertime foods here in the Lone Star State. We may have inherited it from Cajun culture, but that doesn’t make our love any less authentic. Whether it be crawfish or catfish, we don’t care about the kind of water our dinner comes from as long as it tastes good – and boy, does this one unassuming restaurant know how to ensure just that. Johnny’s Barbecue in Seguin is more well-known for catfish than its very own namesake; so much so that it offers it all-you-can-eat style every Friday. Who would’a thought?
It's almost impossible to pass up Johnny's given the eye-catching exterior. Nothing says "Texas" quite like a mural depicting a herd of deer frolicking in a field.
The indoor decor is no less rustic - the heads of prized kills line the walls along with horseshoes, lassos, and other paraphernalia unique to our state.
And as for the catfish? Let's just say that most customers enjoy it more than the barbecue, which is the alleged star of the show here at Johnny's. It's not overly fishy or too dry, but perfectly flaky with just the right amount of cornmeal crust.
In fact, it's so beloved that you can eat it 'till your heart's content every Friday for $12.99. It's served up with your choice of two sides (did someone say hush puppies?!) and tartar and cocktail sauce for your dipping needs.
So next time you have a hankering for catfish, skip the local place and head on over to Johnny's (unless it's a Monday 'cause they're closed.) Your taste buds and soon-to-be-stuffed belly will thank you for it, we promise.
Johnny’s is located at 6036 Texas 123 Business, Seguin, TX 78155, and is open from 10am-7pm Monday through Wednesday and 10am-8pm Thursday through Sunday.
Have you ever eaten catfish at Johnny’s Barbecue? What’s your favorite place to get catfish in Texas?
