Although chain restaurants are much more prevalent than family-owned establishments, we Texans wholeheartedly prefer the latter. Passion and soul are the backbones of quality food, and no-frills atmospheres guarantee the kitchen remains the primary focus. Little Red Barn Steakhouse in San Antonio hasn’t changed ownership in almost 60 years, and the food definitely reflects that.

On Labor Day in 1963, Ralph and Lili Hernandez opened Little Red Barn Steakhouse, which formerly served as a meat market. Starting with just eight tables, the restaurant now seats nearly 1,000 guests at any given time.
Inside, it's truly like stepping onto a working ranch. Hundreds of cattle brands from Texas and Mexico are proudly displayed on the walls, and wooden picnic tables impart an outdoorsy vibe that leaves no question as to what state you're in.
Immediately upon entrance, you're greeted by a hostess decked out from head-to-toe in cowboy attire. A similarly dressed server will seat you and leave menus and salads at the table -- even if the establishment is buzzing with people.
Over a dozen different steaks are on the menu, ranging from 6 oz. sirloins to a 20 oz. porterhouse and everything in between. All entrees come with a salad, your choice of baked potato, steak fries, blue cheese parmesan smashed potatoes, or green beans, and a dinner roll.
Don't forget about drinks! Mojitos, Sangria, and Pina Coladas complete with toasted coconut shavings, whipped cream, and a cherry on top are the ideal complement to any meal.
