If you’re looking for a fall festival that’s worth your while, I definitely recommend attending the Texas Butterfly Festival on November 4, 2023. Boasting free admission, this family-friendly festival celebrates the wonderful winged creature we know as the butterfly with arts and crafts, learning opportunities, vendors, and – of course – plenty of time to chase butterflies! It’s one of my favorite fall festivals in Texas, and I hope you can check it out.
The National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas is known as the "Butterfly Capital of the USA" - and for good reason. The 100-acre preserve is located in the fertile and diverse region of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, which is home to over 300 species of butterflies.
Each year, the Texas Butterfly Festival celebrates the small, yet oh-so-important winged creature, featuring various exhibits and attractions that engage the minds of visitors of all ages.
On Community Day, visitors can make arts and crafts, learn important facts about butterflies, and - of course - chase butterflies on the lush and winding nature trails. There is also a playscape for the little ones.
You'll definitely want to bring a good camera along with you because the sheer number of butterflies is unlike anything you've ever seen. They come in so many unique colors and have all sorts of different wing patterns, and you won't be able to stop gazing in awe at their beauty.
Although it is the National Butterfly Center, you'll also see more than 1,200 different species of plants, 500 species of birds, 200 vertebrate species, and over 90 species of dragonflies!
Have you ever attended the Texas Butterfly Festival? What are your favorite fall festivals in Texas? Tell us in the comments! Don’t forget to check out our previous article to learn more about the Texas Butterfly Center. Even if you can’t make it in time for the festival, the center is worth visiting year-round (especially if you’re a nature lover like me). If you need a high-quality camera to bring with you, REI has the best of the best.
