Most of us who have been living in Texas for any significant amount of time are familiar with the dinosaur tracks in Glen Rose, but the actual trails leading to them aren’t discussed as much. Cedar Brake Outer Loop is one such place, featuring a magical forest, crystal-clear river, and several other breathtaking landscapes along the way.
Cedar Brake Outer Loop is an 8.3-mile trail that winds through Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose. It features several different types of terrain, from an enchanted forest to the pristine Paluxy River, ultimately leading hikers to real dinosaur tracks.
Though long, the trail is only of moderate difficulty. With an elevation gain of just over 700 feet, you can expect some uphill trekking -- but panoramic views such as those offered from this scenic overlook are worth the effort.
A structure with an engraved dino track offers insightful tidbits of information about the park. Take a breather and learn some fun facts while gazing out towards the horizon that seems to stretch out infinitely into the distance.
It's impossible to miss the dinosaur tracks, as they're clearly marked by a signpost. Sauropods left the footprints millions of years ago, when this very landscape resided at the edge of an ancient ocean.
Comparing your shoe size to that of a prehistoric creature is always fun. Before continuing on the trail, take a few minutes to play around and truly comprehend just how massive these behemoths.
Rest-assured boredom is impossible on this diverse trail with new sights to marvel at around every corner. While dinosaur tracks are undeniably the main event, everything in-between is just as remarkable.
