Brownsville, Texas is such an underrated tourist destination. Just two miles from Matamoros, Mexico, Brownsville is a melting pot of cultures that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.
Nature lovers, you'll be in heaven here. Especially for those who have kids, the Gladys Porter Zoo is always a great time, boasting over 1,600 animals from all over the world.

A trip to Brownsville isn't complete without visiting the Sabal Palm Sanctuary. This over 500-acre preserve boasts one of the last-remaining old-growth Sabal Palm forests in the U.S.

Resaca de la Palma State Park is another can't-miss attraction. This tropical oasis along the Rio Grande is home to more than eight miles of meandering trails

Brownsville is also home to Boca Chica Beach, which offers over 1,000 acres of beautiful sand and clear water. It has more seashells than almost any other beach in Texas, and it's also all but deserted, making for a secluded and relaxing experience.
History buffs also have plenty to do in Brownsville. Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park preserves the grounds of the Battle of Palo Alto, which occurred on May 8, 1846. This battle was the first conflict in the border dispute leading to the Mexican-American War.

Don't forget to check out the area around the Brownsville Market Square! Originally an open-air market, the square is now owned by the Brownsville Historical Society, which uses it to house collections and archives. Surrounding the Square are local businesses and artisans, and many of the city's major events and happenings take place here.
