If you believe in local legends and lore, spirits still haunt some of the cemeteries around Dallas – Fort Worth area. Whether it is sightings of floating orbs, showdowns by Texas gunslingers, or spooky refrains of jazz music, some final resting places may not always be as tranquil and peaceful as thought. Here are nine cemeteries with paranormal sightings that you need to visit in the Metroplex.
1. Laurel Land Cemetery - Dallas
Laurel Land is often considered one of the most haunted cemeteries in the Lone Star State, perhaps because of its numerous reports of faint sounds of jazz and blues music late at night, when no living souls are thought to be around. Perhaps that’s because it is the final resting place of music greats Stevie Ray Vaughan, Artie Glenn, and B.W. Stevenson. For conspiracy theorists still searching for answers circling around President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, this is where Dallas police officer J.D. Tippit, said to also have been shot by Lee Harvey Oswald, was laid to rest.
The cemetery is located at 6000 South R.L. Thornton Freeway.
2. Oakwood Cemetery - Fort Worth
Fort Worth’s oldest cemetery, which was founded in 1879, contains such notables as a Texas governor, confederate veterans, founding city fathers, colorful gunslingers, gamblers, and even a whole row of bartenders. Some daring mortals report sounds and spirits reminiscent of the Wild West late at night.
The Oakwood Cemetery is located at 701 Grand Ave.
3. Old Burial Ground - Dallas
This downtown cemetery was used from 1841 to 1869, making it the oldest known cemetery in the city. It laid forgotten until archaeologists discovered it, and many of the graves were relocated to the nearby Freedman’s Cemetery when the burial ground was paved during the construction of Woodall Rogers Freeway. Legends say that forgotten gravesites may remain at the original site, leading ghost hunters to believe that spirits still haunt the area.
4. Birdville Cemetery - Haltom City
The former town of Birdville has nothing to do with birds, but rather the location of an Indian defense fort headed by Jonathan Bird in 1841. It was later abandoned due to threats of a Comanche attack, and there are reports of various paranormal sightings there and sounds suggestive of a faint Indian war cry.
The entrance to Birdville Cemetery is located at 3124 Carson St.
5. Veal Station Cemetery - Parker County
This community is located about 30 minutes northwest of Fort Worth, and its cemetery is known for a eerily glowing tombstone. Other supernatural episodes have included a boy spotted under a tree toward the back of the cemetery, seemingly in search of something or someone. Others report that the wind picks up around certain trees when people walk by them at night.
The entrance is south of Springtown on Veal Station Road, and East of FM51.
6. Cox Cemetery - Dallas
Located right by White Rock Lake, strange events have been seen and heard here, including soft sounds of a muffled bell, a woman's voice, and eerie unexplained sensations.
The entrance is located at 7145 West Circle Dr.
7. Calloway Cemetery - Euless
Rumor has it that if you go here at night you can hear moans and floating orbs often appear. A few ghost hunters have even noted faces that begin to appear on tombstones!
The entrance is located at 12600 Calloway Cemetery Rd.
8. Greenwood Cemetery - Weatherford
This cemetery's claim to fame is being the location of the final resting place of Mary Martin, a.k.a. "Peter Pan" actress and the mother of Larry Hagman. There have been sightings of floating orbs at the 150-year-old cemetery, which are said to hover around the grave of Ms. Martin. Lore also surrounds The Witch's Tomb, which are said to contain a witch and her baby. At night, under a bright moon, you can hear a baby crying. If you knock on the brick door you will hear a knock back!
You can find Greenwood Cemetery at 2851 Ranger Hwy.
9. Mills Cemetery - Garland
Ghost hunters come here to find the Smiley gravesite, where paranormal activity is said to occur on a regular basis. An entire family was buried here after being killed by a tornado. Stories say that if you lay down on the grave at midnight, it will be difficult to sit back up, as if invisible arms are holding you down. Perhaps this is how the Smileys felt as they tried to hold on from being sucked up into the twister.
The entrance is located one block off the intersection of Route 66 and Centerville Rd.
