Here in Texas, we’re proud to have some of the best ice cream in the country. (For undeniable proof, check out this ice cream factory.)
Consequently, we also have some of the creamiest, tastiest, and thickest milkshakes. The following are eight of what we consider to be the very best milkshakes in Texas (listed in no particular order). The next time you find yourself near these eateries, you’ll want to stop for a life-changing milkshake that you can thank us for later.
Note: The restaurants with an address listed have one location in the state. If there’s no address, that means there are multiple locations across Texas (which also means a greater chance of there being one near you!).
The shakes at Hopdoddy are just as unique as the burgers. Choose from classic vanilla bean, stout chocolate, caramel sea salt, red velvet cake, Oreo, or Nutella chocolate pretzel, which is pictured above. You can even make it boozy for an extra $3!
Amy's has seven standard ice cream flavors: Mexican vanilla, Belgian chocolate, vanilla, dark chocolate, sweet cream, coffee, and white chocolate, as well as additional rotating flavors at each location. The mix-in and topping options are endless - everything from fresh fruit to cookies to candy and everything in between. Just look how pretty this Fruity Pebbles shake is!
Grub has some of the most loaded milkshakes in Texas. This is the "ET Shake," with Reese's Pieces, peanut butter, chocolate, and a peanut butter cookie. If that sounds extreme, just wait until you hear about the "Kitchen Sink," with pretzels, peanut butter, salt, butterscotch sauce, caramel sauce, chocolate chips, coffee grounds, and potato chips (whew, that was a mouthful!). You can also get most of the shakes spiked with different flavors of vodka.
Frozen custard is the key ingredient that makes Twisted Root's shakes some of the creamiest in Texas. Feel free to stick with a classic like chocolate or vanilla, or go out on a limb and try one of the more interesting flavors like the "Fat Elvis," which has chocolate, banana, peanut butter, and bacon, or the "Toasted Marshmallow S'mores," with a real toasted marshmallow and graham cracker on top.
Considering this is an entire restaurant dedicated to milkshakes, naming them all would be virtually impossible. Rocky Road, German Chocolate, and Birthday Cake are just a few of the scrumptious menu options. You can also add Nutella to any shake or make it a malt for an extra $0.75.
A cross between shakes and sundaes, "Stackers" are basically parfaits layered with ice cream and toppings. Some of the flavors include "Death by Chocolate," with chocolate soft serve, brownie chunks, cookie crumbles, chocolate chips, and hot fudge, and "Fluffer Nutter," with your choice of soft serve, banana slices, toasted marshmallows, Nutter Butter crumbles, and peanut butter sauce - yummmm. And those are just two of the many mouthwatering options on the menu!
This contemporary burger joint serves up some milkshakes that are just as delicious as they are classy and sophisticated. Birthday cake, Nutella & salted pretzel, caramel java malt, and all the Plain Jane classics are made with the finest ingredients and guaranteed to make any bad (or good!) day better.
Freddy's has locations all over the US, and for good reason. Everyone raves about their delicious custard - it's more creamy and flavorful than words can describe. Although chocolate and vanilla are the only shake flavors to choose from, sometimes it's best to embrace simplicity and go with a classic to really taste the quality of the ice cream without any frills. That being said, there are nearly 30 different topping/mix-in options if variety is your jam!
Smashburger swears by using Haagen-Daas ice cream in their shakes. They insist that its premium, full-fat status makes the most delicious shakes in the world. Choose from chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, coffee, Oreo, peanut butter, or salted caramel, all made even better by the addition of some of the highest quality ice cream available.
Open since 1939, Hut's is all about a hit of nostalgia - including the milkshake glasses. The flavors aren't anything outrageous, but in regards to old-fashioned diners, that's usually a good thing.
