There are 80 state parks in Texas, and each one is definitely worth checking out. That being said, there are a few that stand out for their uniqueness. Balmorhea State Park is definitely one of them. While slightly off the beaten path compared to some of the others, it’s well worth the drive.

The park is located in Reeves County, near the tiny town of Balmorhea.
The park opened to the public in 1968, decades after the Texas State Parks Board bought San Solomon Springs and the surrounding land.

The Balmorhea State Park Cienega Project recreated a desert wetland in the park, which is one of the main things that makes it so unique.
Of course, what really makes this park so special is the presence of the San Solomon Springs.

San Solomon Spring is the largest of the set of four.

This is actually is the world's largest spring-fed swimming pool, covering an area of 1.75 acres.
Sitting high in the Chihuahuan Desert, this oasis has helped with the survival of animals and humans for many years, even allowing cattle ranchers to move into the area.

These days, the pool is mainly used for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Several species of fish live in the spring, so don't be surprised when you realize you're not swimming alone.
People also love to visit for the bird watching, nature walks, and camping.

The park has picnic sites, an outdoor sports area, and a playground. It's extremely visitor-friendly.
No matter what part of Texas you call home, Balmorhea State Park is always worth the drive.

Hours are 8 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. or sunset (whichever comes first) daily, and the entrance fee is $7 for everyone 13 and up. Children ages 12 and under get in free. Visit the Balmorhea State Park website or Facebook page to learn more.
