With the announcement of an exciting new development, Houston is definitely living up to its nickname of “Space City.” Axiom Space has officially broken ground on the world’s first commercial space station, which will train commercial astronauts and man private spaceflights, among other remarkable feats. Here’s what we know so far about the Axiom Space Houston Spaceport.
In May of 2022, ground was officially broken for Axiom Station, the world's first commercial space station. Axiom Space - the company behind this remarkable feat - is also building a new, state-of-the-art headquarters on the property.
The campus will be located at 21300 Gulf Freeway in Webster, in the former Fry's Electronics building. It will span nearly 150,000 square feet and employ a workforce of nearly 600.
Axiom Space is a Houston-based company founded in 2016 by Michael Suffredini, the former Program Manager for NASA's International Space Station, and Kam Ghaffarian, a space entrepreneur. Together, they have taken the company to unimaginable heights - pun intended - leading the first commercial astronaut mission to the ISS.
Development of the spaceport will occur in two phases, the first of which is expected to be finished by April 2023. Phase I primarily includes test facilities, while the second phase will add space for labs, mission operations and training, aircraft operations, and offices.
The company also plans to continue constructing spacecraft modules that will attach to the International Space Station, as well as offer commercial astronaut training.
Individuals, corporations, and space agencies will all benefit from Axiom's spaceflight services. All in all, this accomplishment marks a giant leap for mankind, and forever changes space travel as we know it.
