In 1979, Clarence and Evelyn Besetsny opened the Original Kountry Bakery on Highway 77 in Schulenburg. With fresh ingredients straight from the family farm, this unassuming roadside stop has quickly become a Texas icon.
Evelyn is of Czechoslovakian descent; Clarence, German. Traditional pastries, like these kolaches made using a recipe passed down from Evelyn's grandmother, are bursting with delicious authenticity in each bite.
Flavors include apricot, peach, poppyseed, strawberry, prune, and several more -- including specialty offerings like mango, blueberry, lemon, and dewberry. Any filling can be mixed with cream cheese to balance out the sweetness with a little tang.
Other pastries include various fruit bars, apple strudel, poppyseed roll, turnovers, donuts, and muffins. The bakery also serves klobásníky, or pigs-in-a-blanket, plus lunch items like burgers, sandwiches, and catfish.
On the menu, you'll also see a plethora of made-from-scratch pies. Among the flavors are lemon meringue, buttermilk, cherry, German chocolate pecan, and Dutch apple. Brownies, rice krispies, seasonal cookies, and a handful of other desserts are also available.
