We all know that Austin likes to keep it weird, but this quirky attraction takes that slogan up a notch. Tucked away on the infamous Sixth Street sits a place that’s full of oddities. Gape at a Feejee mermaid, stare at the Minnesota Ice Man, and watch incredible sideshow attractions. In addition to these unbelievable sights, The Museum of The Weird is rumored to be visited by ghostly spirits. This haunting museum in Austin celebrates all things paranormal.
Amongst the bustling bars and booming live music sits an attraction like none other.
This Museum of the Weird pays homage to the sideshows of P.T Barnum, and it lives up to its name. Step inside and prepare yourself for some fascinating finds.
Employees say that spooky spirits haunt this very spot.
The museum sits inside a historic building that dates back to 1872, so it's no surprise that freaky things have occurred within these walls. Managers have reported seeing doorknobs twist on their own and feeling ghostly chills.
In addition to the kooky gremlins and horrifying wax statues, The Museum of The Weird is home to some chilling folklore. Employees say that a pair of African fertility statues are quite powerful, and it's believed that there's a cursed box that should never be opened.
But don't be fooled by this strange man-fish. Feejee mermaids were a common sideshow attraction back in the day, but they aren't as mystical as you might think. The first Feejee mermaids were composed of skeletons from moneys attached to fins from fish.
You can't look away from the items inside this "cabinet of curiosities."
You never know who will pop by -- will it be the famous Lizard Man? A real life mermaid? Or someone completely unexpected? Swing by this strange museum to find out.
The Museum of The Weird is open every day from 10 a.m to midnight. Admission costs $12 for adults and $8 for children under the age of 8. Address: 412 East Sixth Street, Austin, TX 78701. To learn more, visit their website or Facebook page.
