Longhorn Cavern State Park sits on nearly 650 acres in the peaceful Texas Hill Country. The park opened in 1938, and it's attracted nature lovers ever since.

The origin of this unique cavern remain a bit of a mystery, but most geologists think it started forming 450 to 500 million years ago. During that time, a shallow sea covered Central Texas, and the mud underneath it eventually turned into limestone. Two hundred million years later, the Llano Uplift caused major upheaval and created cracks into the rock. Soon, water flowed through these openings and dissolved the stone.
