As Austin continually expands, many buildings get lost to progress. Some vestiges of the past remain, however, and their history continues to shine. Amongst downtown Austin’s sprawling high-rises, one local business sticks to its roots. This historic iron works shop in Austin is now a restaurant and serves the most delicious BBQ you’ve ever tasted.

When you walk inside Iron Works Barbecue, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. Even as the city grows around it, this iconic building stays the same. Iron Works BBQ has a rich history, and it's definitely worth cherishing.

In 1913, the Weigl family immigrated from Germany to America. With only $20 in his pocket, Fortunat Weigl paved his way by creating a bustling iron works business. This little tin building has seen its ups and downs, and it was tragically struck by a massive flood in 1935. Despite these hardships, the Weigl family persevered and eventually crafted pieces for celebrities like Lucille Ball and Bob Hope. The Weigls retired from iron-making in 1977, and the building was refurbished into a BBQ joint the year after.
