Given the sheer size of Texas, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many ghost towns are scattered throughout the state. Mosheim is one such place, with a population of just about 50! This blip on the map is home to the ruins of a majestic school that, unfortunately, was only in use for a short time before being left to decay. This drone footage by Xplore RC captured the eerie scene last year:
Built in the 1920s, the school was dedicated in December of 1930 — just as the Great Depression was befalling the entire nation. Citizens of Mosheim were proud beyond belief, their hopes of educating the future of America with progressive education methods high.
At one point, the school featured seven classrooms, a study hall, auditorium, library, book depository, restrooms, and the superintendent’s office. Unfortunately, there was plenty of extra space to go around.
The town reached its highest population of a whopping 200 or so in 1941, about half of whom were students at the school. Graduating classes consisted of approximately 10 seniors, give or take a few.
By 1960, the handful of remaining high school students were transferred to nearby districts so the school could focus solely on grades K-8. Less than a decade later, the building was repurposed into a community center hosting game nights and other activities.
Mosheim maintains a population of about 50 in the present day, and the school hasn't seen a single student in many years. With no use for the building, it has been left to decay in the elements.
Like many abandoned buildings, the school has seen its fair share of graffiti over the years. What differs here, however, is the nature of it — rather than profanities and other vulgar language, touching phrases such as "Beauty in the Forgotten," have been spray-painted on the walls.
Since this video was taken in early 2019, the school has fallen into an almost unrecognizable state of disrepair. This footage will forever be memorialized as a testament to the people of Mosheim and their bold, determined plans for the future.
