Bridges are more than just simple structures to transport people from one side of the river to the other. They represent the advancement of civilization as we progress and change to adapt to our ever-growing world. They are also often beloved landmarks that folks simply like to admire. The historical Memphis-Arkansas Bridge sums up these accolades in a nice, neat little package. There are also several activities surrounding the structure that make this bridge an integral part of the city. 

The Memphis-Arkansas Bridge (better known as the “The Old Bridge”) crosses over the mighty Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee, into Arkansas. The route you drive is Interstate 55 and it was built in 1949.

The area has three bridges: the one in the south is the Old Bridge, the middle bridge is for the railroad, and the one to the north is a pedestrian bridge called Big River Crossing.

Big River Crossing is also one of the two bridges involved with the City of Memphis’s Mighty Lights. Mighty Lights is a nightly light show that illuminates the Big River Cross Bridge and the Hernando de Soto Bridge. Every 30 minutes, the show starts anew as the bridge changes colors and dancing lights "bounce" off the water.

The Old Bridge won’t be around forever, though. In 2023, the decision was made to replace the bridge and construction will start in 2026. So enjoy this historical piece while we have it and take advantage of the fun found around the bridge, like the Big River Crossing and Mighty Lights.
