The Secluded Dunbar Cave In Tennessee Is So Worthy Of An Adventure
The state of Tennessee is home to over 10,000 caverns, and the subterranean underworld hides everything from lakes to waterfalls and cave art. Throughout the state, you’ll find cave tours and opportunities, but just outside of Nashville the town of Clarksville is home to Dunbar Cave State Park, an oft-overlooked gem you don’t want to miss out on. Wander through one of the most fascinating cave systems in the state on a guided tour and learn all about the area’s history.

Dunbar Cave State Park, located in Clarksville, Tennessee, offers an incredible peek back in time to the 14th Century. The park is 144 acres in its entirety and has both cave tours and hiking trails available for visitors.

Dunbar Cave itself is one of the largest caves in Montgomery County at a solid 8 miles long. Tours are offered seasonally and require a reservation.

You'll find Native American iconography in the cave, which denotes the spot as a sacred place. Religious symbols can be found throughout and archaeological excavations show that the cave was occupied for thousands of years.

Tours begin in May and commonly sell out early, so make sure you reserve a spot as soon as you know when you'll be visiting. The cave is closed from September through April to give the native bats a chance to hibernate undisturbed.

Tours are offered three times a day when the cave is open, but otherwise, you can explore the natural landscape of the park as well. There are 3 miles of hiking trails throughout the park, and if you're bringing little ones we'd recommend the easy Lake Trail over the more strenuous Recovery Trail.

Dunbar Cave has long been a place of spiritual wonder and beauty. Come learn about the history of the space and its historical significance to the area.
