If you’re looking for a spectacular experience beneath the ground, then Tennessee is a prime state to visit. It’s not known as “Old Rocky Top” for no reason, and the Forbidden Caverns experience in Sevierville, just below the Smoky Mountains, will highlight the state’s history in a way you’ve never seen before. Forbidden Caverns is a tourist attraction found right here in Sevierville, Tennessee, but is known for its local historical significance. Flint from the caves was once used by the Eastern Woodland Native Americans for knives, scrapers, and arrowheads.
Back in the early 20th century, the subterranean spaces were once used to make moonshine in secret. It wasn't until the 1960s that the cave was originally excavated as a public attraction. It took three years, and the Forbidden Caverns were eventually opened to the public in 1967.
The caverns descend several hundred feet below ground. You'll have the chance to wander along an underground stream, one that's supplied by an underground lake beneath English Mountain, and there are incredible rock formations and grottos to view along the way.
The rock formations are truly incredible and look like something from another world. The cave was once used as shelter from the chill of winter, and the unique calcite formations throughout are still growing and taking shape after thousands of years.
You can tour the Forbidden Caverns for yourself; the average guided tour is going to run just short of an hour. There are some strenuous parts of the tour, so you'll want to make sure everyone in your party can handle a moderate-to-difficult walking tour.
There's magic below the surface here in Tennessee - you only have to look. Make sure you bring shoes that can handle the damp terrain and small puddles, too. It can get chilly in the caverns!
