In every town’s history, there are always some stories that don’t seem to make their way, quite fully, to the light. Tennessee is a grand old state. One of the many that experienced the heartbreak of the Civil War, the state that hid a Secret City of industry during World War II has since expanded into a conservative business hub here in the south. It’s a state with great history, of heartbreak and the act of overcoming, but it’s the little-known town of White Bluff, Tennessee that’s really caught our eye. It’s where you’ll find the legend of the White Screamer.
The town of White Bluff, Tennessee, is a picturesque community located in the heart of the American south. With roughly 3,000 folks calling this tiny town their home, it's an intimate locale with an odd, unprecedented history.
You see, White Bluff is known for the legend of the White Screamer. There isn't much known about the creature, other than from the unlucky folks who have managed to spy it out in the dark of the night. The story was first recorded in the 1920s, and has since become the true definition of a "local legend."
The story begins with a young family who traveled to the wilds of White Bluff in the early 20th century in search of a new and better life. The family was made up of both a mother and father, and seven children. It was quite the brood!
This historic photo shows a group of young folks in White Bluff, who are definitively NOT a part of this poor family's experience in the woods. No, you see, the folks in our story had barely settled into their home when the nightly screaming began. Each night, every night, the darkness exploded with wailing and crying, ungodly screeching that made the blood of parent and child grow cold as ice.
As you might have guessed, this story is a dark one. The family's patriarch grew enraged as the weeks went on, and one evening he ran into the woods with his gun, racing to find the strange creature that was screaming in the dark. He never found it. Instead, he returned home to his greatest nightmare: his family hacked to bits, their bodies flayed and tossed throughout the house.
There are multiple stories from folks who claim to have seen the White Screamer, a creature that is considered to be a banshee. The Banshee comes from Irish tradition; it's known as a creature that follows families with terrifying wails, foretelling death.
Whether the White Screamer of White Bluff, Tennessee is a prophet of death or a monster itself, no one knows. Ask a local about the screams heard in the woods, maybe you'll hear the story sitting around a campfire one night. The White Screamer is a dark story, a creepy mystery, one that might never be answered.
Yikes, we won’t be sleeping tonight! You can learn a bit more about Tennessee with a trip below the surface…
