The Tennessee State Prison looms on the west side of town, a massive reminder of Nashville’s spotted past. The castle-like structure prompts quite a few lookie-loo’s, folks who are interested in the stunning architecture and eerie aspect of an entirely abandoned building that sits on the edge of the city. We stumbled across one of the most beautiful video captures of the building we’ve seen, kindly provided by the city of Nashville. Care to step inside?
No one has been inside the Tennessee State Prison for years. Sure, you may make your way beyond the border walls for a walk along the grounds if you're with the local preservation chapter, but that's about it. The formidable structure stands alone and empty, a brooding reminder of our past.
The Tennessee Department of Corrections, recognizing the historic beauty of the prison despite it's wildly spotted past, has released a high-quality drone video that takes you behind the walls of one of Nashville's most beautiful buildings.
Why can't I go myself, you may ask? The prison has deteriorated past the point of safe preservation, so it will simply stay a monument to Old Sparky and the men who once inhabited the space. You may have seen it used as a filming location as well, most famously as the prison facade in "The Green Mile" with Tom Hanks.
Although you may think — what?! That’s so long! We think it’s highly, highly worth it. It’s your only chance to see the prison as it is, and remember how it once was.
Pretty amazing, isn’t it?
