My name is Chris Dodge and I live right here in the great state of Tennessee. My family and I are full adventurers filled with passion to see the amazing things our state has to offer. We are avid hikers and have explored many different places in Tennessee and beyond but we are always thankful to be living in such a glorious state.
We have a lot of scenic places in Tennessee, stretching from east to west. Lots of hard work has gone into making roadways leading us through and to some of these amazing places. We are thankful for the great men and women that have put forth those plans and given us places to explore our naturally beautiful surroundings. The Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway is one of those roads and will drive you straight through Land Between The Lakes, and the journey is quite incredible. So gather up some great road trip snacks and let the rubber hit the pavement and take off on an incredible journey!
Land Between Lakes is positioned in the Northwest corner of Tennessee, and the scenic Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway begins in Dover and extends up through Western Kentucky.
This scenic drive takes you through sprawling forests and rolling hills positioned between two beautiful lakes. Keep your eyes peeled during your journey because this protected area is filled with wildlife. This is also a popular spot for water recreation, with plenty of beautiful lakes to choose from you just can't go wrong.
Sometimes the best way to enjoy a scenic drive is to park the car and step out into the great outdoors on foot.
There are a couple of hiking trails along the trace and one of the best ones is the Bear Creek Loop. This trail will take you around a seven-mile loop with under 500 feet of elevation gain and is the best way to stretch your legs along the drive. We suggest taking the loop counterclockwise and making sure you have a map, bug spray, and some good hiking shoes. With proper preparation, you can enjoy a trail with creek crossings, beautiful forests, and some peace and quiet. This is a great option to break up the trip on this Land Between Lakes drive.

There are plenty of historical sights along this glorious Tennessee scenic byway so make sure to stop when you see the Great Western Iron Furnace.
This massive limestone behemoth was built in 1854 to smelt down the area’s iron ore. Make sure to read the signs to find out how this tall structure was used before you continue along the road. It may only be a quick stop along the way but gives a fascinating insight into the past.
However, you can easily see them along the Woodland Trace. The South Bison Range is the perfect place to see dozens of these creatures meandering through the tall grass and grazing in the fields. I think you will find that out of all the scenic drives in Tennessee that this one has some pretty unique sights.
You can take a step back in time with a trip to The Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Living History Museum.
When you arrive you will see farmers in period piece clothing working on the farm. You can lend a hand and learn what farming and country life was like back during the 1800s. While you are there make sure to peruse through the farming artifacts and meet the friendly farm animals. Also always check The Homeplace website before you go so you can make sure you know the events they are running that day.
Near the northern border, before you cross state lines into Kentucky, you can take a break at the Cedar Pond Picnic Area.
This little pond is the perfect place to take a break and bring along a packed lunch. After your meal with a view, you can continue on this scenic road or turn back around and do it all in reverse. This road continues on for a while and has plenty of beauty to behold in Kentucky as well so make sure you take the time to check that out as well.
The Woodland Trace National Scenic Byway is a great place to visit for a busy day of exploring the Land Between Lakes. You can simply take the drive or make all of the stops, the choice is yours. No matter which you choose to do, we have to say, this is one scenic area that you are sure to enjoy. For more information about this area please visit the Land Between Lakes Website.
For another epic road trip on a scenic byway check out the Natchez Trace starting in Nashville and heading south.
