My name is Chris Dodge and I live right here in the great state of Tennessee. My family and I are full adventurers filled with passion to see the amazing things our state has to offer. We are avid hikers and have explored many different places in Tennessee and beyond but we are always thankful to be living in such a glorious state.
Exploration is innately hardwired into our very being. We have a drive and desire to expand, create, and improve in so many different ways. That desire has pushed humanity forward for thousands of years, and that same vigor has led to some pretty significant discoveries. The expanse of our country all came from those same desires for a better life as we know it. Step back in time to the 18th century by visiting a seemingly untouched village. The Rocky Mount State Historic Site in Piney Flats is just waiting to be explored.
We have some pretty bustling cities in Tennessee, but imagine for a second what it looked like over 250 years ago.
Take away the tall buildings and all of the paved roads. In their place once stood massive fields and forests as far as the eye can see. Lush land beckoned explorers to come and find a new life west of what was known. Pioneers crossed through the rugged landscape of the western North Carolina mountains and arrived in Tennessee.
Late in the 1700s, a man named William Cobb built a home in the new territory. It grew to become the village we see represented today. Before Tennessee was known and recognized as a state, it was part of a massive expanse of land called the Southwest Territory, and Rocky Mount become its capital.
Today you can visit this important historical site in any season. It offers day tours and night tours by candlelight as well as host several different events throughout the year.
Tours will take you to different homesteads, and interpreters will be busy going about business wearing period clothing, which makes for an immersive experience. Actors will share their experiences and educate guests about what life was like back then.
You will get the chance to see the lovable Cotswold sheep raised and cared for at Rocky Mount. Just walking the property alongside the historic structures is beautiful enough, but then pairing it with all this experience makes Rock Mount a perfect place to visit for any history buff.
A fresh coat of snow makes the entire place feel magical. The new growth of spring is masterfully groomed by the groundskeeper. Roam the lush rolling hills of green in the summer. Then, of course, you can enjoy the explosions of color that burst forth in the trees for autumn.
Rocky Mount State Historic Site in Piney Flats played a pivotal role in the history of Tennessee. Visiting it gives a greater appreciation for our story that is still being told. With a beautiful and well-preserved village to explore we highly recommend checking it out for yourself. Plan a tour or keep an eye out for the special events they host throughout the year.
