This year on the famed Smithsonian National Museum Day, you can enjoy over 12 Tennessee museums without taking a dollar out of your wallet. If you're visiting Tennessee or perhaps even if you call the state your home, you most likely opt outside when it comes to exploring the Volunteer State. And how can you resist?! The state is home to everything from the lush Cumberland Plateau to the stunning Great Smoky Mountains in the east and winding Mississippi in the West.

Keep in mind that only a certain number of museums are participating, and they're linked below as well.

So where can you go this September? Enjoy an afternoon at the Historic Ramsey House in Knoxville, Tennessee, or maybe Trousdale Place in Gallatin. The Marble Springs State Historic Site in Knoxville is also offering free admission, as is the Museum of Appalachia in Clinton, Tennessee.

You'll find that of the dozen museums taking part in the experience, a large majority are located on the eastern side of the state, like the Knoxville Museum of Art and the Mabry-Hazen House.
