Nashville is one of the most unique cities in the world. We’re known for our southern hospitality as well as our contributions to the world of music, art, and pop culture. But not many people know that one of Nashville’s most unique spring traditions doesn’t have to do with any of these things. The Iroquois Steeplechase is a horse race that the whole family can enjoy, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a great chance to get out, eat some great food, watch the horses, and of course, wear the most ridiculous hat you can possibly find.
The Iroquois Steeplechase has taken place in Nashville nearly every Spring since 1941. As advertised, it's where tradition meets today for the whole community.
Throughout the day, there are 7 different races that culminate with the eponymous race, named after Iroquois, the first American horse to win the Epsom Derby, Brittan's most prestigious horse race.
The main race is three miles long and features fences, troughs, and flat stretches. The race usually takes just over five and a half minutes, but every second in thrilling.
One of the most notable parts of the Steeplechase event is the abundance of hats. In fact, there's a competition every year for best hat, and the winner gets a $1,000 gift card!
While the races are fun, most of the activity is happening on the grounds. Food trucks, trunk shows, and tailgates are the highlights for the nearly 25,000 people that attend annually.
Tickets need to be purchased in advance, which can be done on the Iroquois Steeplechase website. You can also find parking information and race day maps at that site.
If you missed this year's event, there's always next May. The race is held at Percy Warner Park, but the best address for the racetrack is 7179 Highway 100.
