There are plenty of small towns and tight-knit, tidy cities throughout the state of Tennessee, but there are none quite like Savannah. The county seat of Hardin County is small, with less than 7,000 folks calling the town their home, but it’s the city’s expansive history and a small coffee shop with out-of-this-world scones that really put Savannah on the map. If you haven’t been, then you may just need to pack up the kids and leave Music City for a quick adventure.
Savannah was once called, "Rudd’s Ferry," named for one of the early settlers in the area but was renamed Savannah when the area was purchased by a wealthy landowner. Yes, the name actually was inspired by Savannah, Georgia! The greater area played host to the Battle of Shiloh in 1862 during the Civil War, and Pickwick State Park can be found just twelve miles south of the city.
Savannah is geographically located on the east bank of the Tennessee River, and with just 6.5 square miles of recorded city space, it makes for a small, sweet town to spend a bit of time. Visit the Tennessee River Museum if you have a moment, and the Savannah Historic District Tour begins at the famed Cherry Mansion. The home was once the headquarters for Federal Major General CF Smith during his tenure throughout the Civil War. If you visit, make sure you take some time to wander the town’s historic downtown.
Selah Coffee is located right on Main Street in the historic district of downtown Savannah, Tennessee, and it may just be one of the best places to enjoy a cup of joe in town. The large front windows let in quite a bit of light throughout the day, and there are plenty of tables for gathering and swapping stories.
Then there are the scones. If you ask anyone about Selah Coffee, you’re going to hear about two things: the kind service and the scones. Visitors are bound to fall in love with the roasted coffee and espresso-based drinks, but you don’t want to leave without a treat.
The scone flavors fluctuate throughout the year, so make sure you ask what the special is when you visit. Here you can see an ultra-decadent peanut butter scone. Yum!
Perfectly moist and flaky where they should be, each scone at Selah is made with love. From blueberry to maple to chocolate chip, there are all sorts of flavors that lend themselves to this delicious morning pastry, and there’s no better place to leisurely enjoy one than Savannah.
