Hiking in Tennessee is one of the greatest draws of the state. Stuck hard in the middle of the nation, we have some of the prettiest lakes and meadows and mountains, the beautiful span of the Cumberland Plateau and deep gorges that cut hard crevices through layers of rock. Still, sometimes you need a little something different to spice up a hike, and a day spent at Savage Gulf will give you a creative and stunning experience only an hour from the city. Hikes near Nashville tend to be one in the same — let’s take a trip!
Savage Gulf is a gorgeous area in southern Tennessee that's rife with trails long and short, from easy walks to hard knock treks through the wilderness. Still, your hard work is rewarded with waterfall views and stunning panoramic vistas.
The popular Savage Day Loop is located 112 miles from Nashville, which means you're only ninety minutes from some of the prettiest countryside landscapes in the state. Located near Palmer outside of Chattanooga, the hike isn't hard to get to by car.
Or you could make a different decision... and find your way to The Bridge. If you take the 10-mile Collins Gulf Trail you'll find your way across a 100-foot suspension bridge over the Collins River.
The old-fashioned suspension bridge is one of the most jaw-dropping sights, looking so perfect yet wildly out of place in the middle of the forest. The 10-mile moderately traveled trail makes it easy to experience in both an isolated or group setting.
You can also take the 5.1-mile day loop, or choose from any handful of other shorter, easier trails that don't involve bridges and long walks. But why would you? It's pretty neat!
Hike the falls, hike the river, take photographs. Savage Gulf covers 15,590-acres of raging wilderness, choked with waterfalls and handfuls of wildflowers.
Experience your state, Tennesseans. We live in a pretty one, and the traffic on 440 isn't worth it. Say goodbye to Nashville and fall in love with Savage Gulf this weekend!
