Nashville isn’t only known for being a big city with big dreams. You may hear us boasting some of the biggest stars in the music industry and an illustrious past that pretty much holds the key to any form of musical nostalgia, but we’re still a humble place with a few heartbreaking moments over the years. For one, 1963? We’re still feeling the pangs of loss.
Camden, Tennessee is a quiet town located west of Nashville, roughly halfway between Memphis and Music City. A small spot, in 2010 there were only 3,582 folks that called it home - we can only imagine the drastic difference in 1963.
On March 5th, 1963, country music star Patsy Cline alongside Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hanks, along with their pilot, left their Kansas City venue in hopes of returning safely to Nashville.

The night as rough with the raging winds and rains of a late winter storm. The small plane, like the one seen above, simply couldn't handle the rough weather. The low visibility caused the pilot to may a few functionality errors that resulted in a devastating crash of the plane.

There were no survivors. The wooded area has since been turned into an homage to the victims, four in total. The impact completely obliterated the air craft and locals reported hearing a dull crash at roughly 6:30 p.m.
There was a FAA investigation regarding the crash and the area, and the plane structure was inspected thoroughly. It was eventually ruled that the pilot simply shouldn't have flown in the rough weather, and his disorientation led to the subsequent crash.
The plane was headed to the now defunct Cornelia Fort Airpark in East Nashville, Tennessee. Although Camden holds the key to this heartbreaking story, Nashville still mourns the loss.
