Nashville is known as a city where tourists and locals alike can eat well and eat plenty. From our famous southern fried chicken, biscuits or grits, to the more modern proliferation of hot chicken, Nashville has no shortage of foods that it does well. Where it really shines, though, is in its barbecue. Places like Texas, Memphis, and Kansas City often get widely publicized as barbecue Mecca’s, but Nashville should not be left out of that list, especially when it comes to barbecue sandwiches. Don’t believe us? Check out these truly Nashville spots, try them out, and you can be the judge for yourself.
Bar-B-Cutie started in Nashville in the first half of the 20th century, and they've expanded across state lines, offering their barbecue sandwiches and famous sides to folks all over the country. Today, there are 6 locations in the Nashville area.
Hog Heaven is just on the edge of Nashville's Centennial Park, and it serves up some of the best barbecue sandwiches you've ever had. Try out their Alabama White Sauce for something a little different.
One of Broadway's hidden gems among other kitschy bars, Rippy's Bar & Grill serves up a lot of typical bar food, but their barbecue sandwich truly shines. Get the onion rings to go with it - you won't regret it.
Peg Leg Porker is tucked back in to the Gulch, but it should not be overlooked. Their award-winning barbecue draws visitors from all over the country, and for good reason. Their specialty is their dry ribs, so you might want to get a side of those as well.
Jack's Bar-B-Que now has multiple locations across town, but their most iconic is their location on Broadway. You can identify it by the sign with flying pigs or the inevitable line that's halfway down the block. All of their sauces are homemade and pay homage to barbecues of different parts of the country.
Edley's Bar-B-Que also has multiple locations across town, and you can consistently find a line at each of them. Their sandwiches are to-die-for good, but they also serve up some more eclectic dishes for the more adventurous, like the catfish tacos or the Tuck Special, a brisket sandwich with pimento cheese and an over easy egg.
Martin's started in Nolensville, just outside of Nashville, but has since expanded in to the city. Their sandwiches are great, but they too offer other interesting items. The redneck taco is a fan favorite -- slaw, barbecue, and sauce, all stacked on top of a piece of cornbread.
Barbecue may not be your thing, but for a truly Nashville experience, try out one of these spots every native Nashvillian grew up going to.
