The Story Behind This Nashville Burger Is Beyond Fascinating
In recent years, Nashville has seen its fair share of new restaurants, each more innovative, more decorated, and more hyped than the last. But few have lived up to that hype as well as West Nashville’s newest burger joint, Hugh Baby’s. They pride themselves on fresh, cheap food, and boy do they deliver. If you go and order a cheeseburger, you won’t be disappointed, but you might miss out on their one menu item that has a truly unique and fascinating history….

The folks at Hugh Baby's strive to keep things simple. They start with the menu, where your only options are burgers, fries, barbecue, hotdogs, and milkshakes.

Their classic burgers like this one are great, but it's the "Slugburger" that's truly unique. It got its name from its Depression-era roots when these kinds of burgers only cost a nickel (also called a slug) to buy.

As you can tell, the Slugburger doesn't quite look like a normal burger. That's because it's made from a combination of ground pork and soy meal, two cheap and readily available items in 1930's Corinth, Mississippi, which is where this tasty burger comes from.

Hugh Baby's gives a nod to the Southern Slugburger and its simplicity, right alongside its other classics like the humble hot dog and classic soda fountain milkshakes.
