In most circumstances, the past is the past. There’s no revisitation. There’s no opportunity to go back in time, to see the world as it once was, to relive an experience that has long since passed. In Scott County, Tennessee however, you can get pretty close. The Museum of Scott County works hard to bind the history of the past to the immediacy of the future, and it’s become a place where history truly does come alive.
The Museum of Scott County was opened in May of 2003, the brain child of local teachers at Scott High School. The idea for a history museum was locally funded, and two groups of students were recruited to help build the museum itself.
The museum itself is a pretty neat example of what can be done when the public comes together. Everything from the building of the physical structures to the plumbing and wiring of the museum was done by locals. The museum itself is operated by students on the Scott High School school campus.

Scott County itself is located right on the edge of the Tennessee-Kentucky border, and the museum examines both a geographical and cerebral history of the place. You'll find everything from authentic battleship archives to a Frontier Village and General Store.

As the only museum in the United States to be operated by students, on a school campus, the Museum of Scott County holds up well. Each building in the 10+ building complex has a honed focus on a historical element, making it easy to see and experience and myriad of past events.
You'll want to make sure to visit their website to check for different events and experiences held throughout the year. This is a must-visit, a little known museum that has a high quality focus and drive.
Since the museum is operated by students, it's closed on the weekends but open during the week. You can visit for yourself from 8:30 a.m. to 3 .pm., Monday through Friday.
