Tennessee makes some of the best ice creams in the world, but most folks don’t know about it. Tucked away in the heart of Athens, Tennessee is Mayfield Dairy Farms, a widely distributed yet still fairly unknown local business that’s spreading smiles and ice cream cones across the south. You’ve most likely seen the branding at your local grocery store, or perhaps have had the chance to indulge at a mom ‘n pop eatery somewhere in the southern region. No matter how you’ve experienced Mayfield before, there’s nothing like a visit to the dairy mothership to truly indulge this season.
Although a local business, Mayfield Dairy Farms has been honored by publications such as Tennessee Vacation and TripAdvisor as one of the best spots to explore in the state. If you're looking to explore a historic aspect of Tennessee, one that's still relevant in the present, you have to make your way to Athens.
Mayfield came about in 1910 when founder TB Mayfield, Jr. purchased 45 Jersey cows and began his own dairy business delivering milk to the folks of Athens, Tennessee. Four generations later, the Mayfield family has expanded a simple milk-centric business into an ice cream empire, making the family name known across the nation.
Mayfield is now one of the leading dairies not only in the American south but in the nation. It's become a local legend and a true Tennessee tradition.
You can visit the Athens-located original space to learn all about the production and day-to-day activities that go on in Mayfield. There's an educational behind-the-scenes tour available for groups, though you will have to call for personalized admission pricing.
Tour hours run from Monday to Tuesday, as well as Thursday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tours every hour on the hour. On Saturday you can tour from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., although the first tour doesn't begin until 10 a.m.. The shop is closed on Wednesday and Sunday so Mayfield can make up your favorite sweet treats!
Make sure you indulge at the ice cream parlor on site, too. There's nothing like a fresh batch of ice cream after a day's worth of learning. If you haven't been to Mayfield Dairy in Athens, Tennessee? It's a summertime must.
