The Volunteer State has experienced plenty of history over the years, from mysterious ancient burial mounds to wars waged within our borders. If you are a history buff, there is plenty to explore and see in Tennessee. Take, for instance, the Bear Spring Furnace in Dover, Tennessee, a place that speaks of long-lost art and tells a story spanning decades.  

Dover is a pleasant little town along the Cumberland River that makes for a scenic Sunday drive. Many people flock to the waters for fishing, kayaking, and bird watching -- and for good reason. Places like the nearby Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge offer a beautiful place to paddle and explore.

Take a drive down Route 49 and soon enough you will be greeted by a giant stone structure. This is the Bear Spring Furnace. Originally built in 1830, this was the only furnace of its kind in the area. In 1850, this fiery structure produced 2,000 tons of metal.

The operation stopped in 1854, however, and laid dormant for eight more years. At that time, our country was deep into the chaos of the American Civil War. Union troops ended up destroying the structure in 1862.
