There’s something so magical about the Great Smoky Mountains. As the most popular national park in the United States, it’s well-trafficked by locals and tourists alike, for its stunning views and rustic experiences. One of these is the chance to wander Tennessee’s most expansive old-growth forests. If you’ve never made your way to the Maddron Bald Trail, then you’re in for a treat. This stunning experience is one that provides some of the best views in the state, and you just might feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. Learn more about this neat Tennessee opportunity below!
The Maddron Bald Trail is located near the town of Cosby, Tennessee, and is a moderate trail that takes hikers through the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains' Old-Growth forest.
Also termed a primary forest, a primeval forest and a virgin forest, an old-growth forest refers to a forested area that's aged without a large amount of disturbance.
It's the closest we can get to going back in time and seeing Tennessee before its significant human occupation. You'll see all sorts of incredible sights, since old-growth forests boast a high level of biodiversity and rejuvenate themselves without outside interference.
The Maddron Bald Trail is accessible all year round, too! Although dogs are not allowed on the trail, we'd recommend coming to peep the wildflowers in spring, to bird-watch and experience the wildlife of Tennessee up close. There's even a waterfall along the route!
