It’s one thing to go spelunking through the underbelly of Ol’ Rocky Top, but it’s another thing entirely to experience the whole of Tennessee’s caving systems by boat. By BOAT, folks. This isn’t just a walk through a winding cave trail, this is an underground nautical adventure. This is truly one of the most unique and interesting experiences that Tennessee has to offer. The question is: are you ready to explore the Lost Sea?
The Lost Sea is located in a series of caves that cover the area known as Craighead Caverns. While the caves were well known, the lake wasn't discovered until a teenager found it in the early 1900s.
The Lost Sea sees 150,000 visitors per year, but experiencing the caves and the lake is a truly intimate and incredible experience that you certainly don't want to miss.
The tour to the lake involves a 3/4 mile round-trip hike through the wide, sloping paths of the cave as you learn about the history and geology of the cave.
Once you get to the Lost Sea itself, you'll be able to board one of their glass-bottomed boats and go out on the water. The water is so clear that you can see the cave walls below the water, making for a truly unforgettable experience.
This tunnel to the entrance of the cave looks like it's straight out of a sci-fi movie, which is perfect because the Lost Sea seems truly otherworldly.

The Lost Sea is open year round, 7 days a week. You can expect to spend about $20 per adult on tickets, which you can buy ahead of time online at their website. You can visit the cave yourself in Sweetwater at 140 Lost Sea Road. Happy sailing!
