One of the tallest towers in Tennessee isn’t found in the midst of Music City or Memphis, no, not even in the heart of Knoxville. You will find the Gatlinburg Space Needle right in the middle of Gatlinburg, and it is currently the fifth tallest tower in the state of Tennessee. Although it was once the second tallest tower in the Volunteer State, the observation deck that sits over 400 feet above the city below has become a must-visit for many. There is also an arcade on-site with all sorts of video and escape games, so once you defy gravity you can hone your competitive streak with your friends.
If you look at a photograph of the Gatlinburg skyline, you will no doubt see the city’s own Space Needle right in the center of the shot. At 407 feet tall, the Needle is hard to miss, and the observation tower that sits at 342 feet is one of the most popular spots to visit for folks looking to enjoy a 360-degree view of the mountains and city beyond.
Although shorter than the famous Seattle landmark by a good 200 feet, the Gatlinburg Space Needle remains a must-visit if you’re ever in the city. It is open every day of the year, and you will have the chance to ride up one of two glass elevators that service the observation tower.
Once you reach the top you will be able to get a closer look at the valley below with one of the site’s free viewfinders. Check out the Higher Learning exhibits to learn more about the history of both Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains.
Can't make it to the top? Check out a live view of the city by way of a webcam on the Gatlinburg Space Needle website. You can enjoy the view from the Needle without ever leaving the comfort of your home!
Although, of course, we would definitely recommend you leave the comfort of your home. This view is truly unlike any other, and it makes for a neat stop along the Gatlinburg tourist stretch.
Have you been to the Gatlinburg Space Needle? You can purchase tickets for $15.95 per adult and $9.95 for children between the ages of 4 and 11. There are group rates and both senior and military specialty prices.
