There’s something so fascinating about abandoned places. About spots that are left to nature, forgotten by society and broken down by a lack of life. Here in Tennessee you’ll find a few broken spaces scattered across the state. Out in Memphis, we’re most fascinated with the heartbreaking closure of the once popular Libertyland theme park. Once a beautiful homage to the state, it’s now committed only to memory.
Libertyland opened, as it should have, on July 4th, 1976, in Memphis, Tennessee. The old amusement park operated at the Mid-South Fairgrounds. Before its closing in 2005, there were 24 attractions available to visitors.
Here's a quick shot of the wildly popular Zippin' Pippin. It's famous in the park, because it is widely known to be Elvis Presley's favorite ride in Libertyland. That's quite the legacy for a rickety old coaster, wouldn't you say?
The park was slowly dismantled after a couple of years, which means this abandoned space is only committed to memory. It's where so may Tennesseans spent their childhoods, where memories were made and great stories were told.
It's always interesting to look back and see what has been lost. Why does one amusement park fail and another succeeds, why do folks flock to one half of the state and leave the other? It's a strange thing, but a fascinating study.
