There’s really nothing more heartwarming than a solid sandwich enjoyed in the warmth of a Tennessee afternoon. Something big, preferably, chock full of fresh meats and veggies with a flavorful bite. A slather of sauce like mayonnaise or mustard (perhaps both?) tops off the meal with culinary aplomb. Here in Tennessee, Hazel’s Lucky Dice Delicatessen serves some of the best sandwiches in Memphis. The Jewish delicatessen is mainly a local haunt, but it’s one that deserves a place on your dining bucket list.
If you look closely, you can see the Hazel's Lucky Dice Delicatessen sign hung beneath the Bar DKDC sign. Hazel's opened in 2020 and quickly became a go-to spot in the neighborhood for those craving sandwiches from a local Jewish deli.
Hazel's doesn't operate out of its own storefront but instead prepares takeout sandwiches inside the renowned The Beauty Shop Restaurant. The shared space makes it possible for both eateries to operate in tandem with a shared outdoor space.
Hazel's Lucky Dice Delicatessen is a Jewish-style deli that operates in the Cooper-Young neighborhood, serving lunch takeout on weekdays beginning at 11 a.m. It’s a bit of a hole in the wall, which means when you order online or for takeout that you won’t be elbowing scads of locals out of the way for your NYC-style pastrami sandwich…yet.
You’ll find New York deli sandwiches on the menu, including everything from a classic Reuben to pastrami. The roast beef on weck is a favorite, and the PLTA is a pastrami bacon sandwich served with lettuce, tomato, avocado, and horseradish mayo.
Here's a close shot of the "Oy Vey" fries, a decadent dish that consists of fat cut fries, Russian dressing, pastrami meat, jalapeños, cheese, and scallions. Salads are also on the menu, and we’d recommend the Farmers Market Warm Salad that’s served with butternut squash and French feta. Yum!
This isn’t a bagel, friends. It’s a bialy! A bialy is a Yiddish word that refers to a flatbread roll that’s topped with chopped onions. It’s made with a different type of flour than a bagel and is also baked as opposed to boiled. At Hazel’s, you can order a bialy with regular or scallion cream cheese, or dairy-free Tofutti.
Have you been to Hazel's Lucky Dice Delicatessen? From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the week you can snag a meal to-go, and ordering is available both on the restaurant's website and by phone at 901-272-0830. Happy dining!
