The GooGoo Cluster is an American classic. It’s the kind of candy that allows nostalgic memories to resurface, and just a bite can rekindle sweet moments enjoyed long ago. Although most folks around the United States have tried and or have heard of a GooGoo Cluster, most of them don’t understand the importance of this particular candy. It’s not just a sugary sweet treat, folks. It’s a piece of Tennessee state history.
Did you know that before the introduction of the GooGoo Cluster in 1912, there was no such thing as a combination candy bar? Chocolate bars were just that: classic bars of chocolate, with no additions.
This particularly sugary Nashville treat was introduced by the Standard Candy Company in 1912. It consisted of a mound of marshmallow nougat, caramel, roasted peanuts and milk chocolate. It was quite the feat, since the rounded shape made it harder to wrap than a square or rectangular bar of chocolate.
It was also the first time a combination candy bar was put into production. The recipe hasn't changed, and although cooking methods have been updated to fit the safety measures of the times, the GooGoo Cluster is a classic through and through.
You can visit the storefront for yourself in the heart of Nashville's downtown. It consists of a small storefront that sells all sorts of GooGoo-centric gifts, as well as a dessert bar with decadent milkshakes and sundaes.
If you're looking for a fun event, you can sign up for one of the shop's Chocolate Experiences. Chocolate classes and experiences are hosted on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and there are even opportunities for private events. The GooGoo Shop hosts the sweetest bachelorette events in Nashville, and it's the perfect spot for a holiday experience.
No trip to Nashville is complete without a visit to the GooGoo Shop. It will forever be the candy bar that changed history. We simply wouldn't have Reeses or Twix or Mars Bars without it.
You can visit for yourself from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday through Thursday, and from Friday to Sunday until 7 p.m.
