Autumn is best known for pumpkin patches and corn mazes, but let’s not forget the scarecrow! Known for being both fun and quirky, it’s found its place in history by way of “The Wizard of Oz” and eerie, creepy stories to tell in the dark. The scarecrow is an autumnal tradition, one of the best ways to deck a house or a farm out in fall decor, and Gatlinburg is upping the script. This tiny east Tennessee town has found a way to break a world record, and there are OH so many scarecrows involved. Don’t miss out on the chance to see them in Tennessee this fall!
East Tennessee turns into a true wonderland come autumn. The trees explode with fall foliage, turning the entire scope of the Great Smoky Mountains all colors of gold, orange and red.
Gatlinburg is known for being not only a fun town for tourists, but a great place for locals to hang out and experience the quirky fun of east Tennessee. This year, however, this Smoky Mountain town has set their sights on something even more incredible: breaking a Guinness World Record.
This October, Gatlinburg has made it a goal to set up over 4,000 scarecrows in an effort to break the record set by the United Kingdom's National Forest Adventure Farm. In August 2014, 3,812 scarecrows were put on display, and Gatlinburg has set their sights on changing the honor right here in 2019.
It's not just the number of scarecrows required to break the record. Each of the scarecrows need to have human facial features, and need to be displayed within the walkable area of downtown Gatlinburg. It should take six to eight weeks for Guinness to make their final decision on the potential new record.
Not such a tiny town anymore, hey? Gatlinburg set their sights on the globe and it looks like they just might hit the mark. If you're in the city this fall, make sure to check out the incredible scarecrow turnout.
Will you be joining in the fun this year? There's all sorts of fun to be had in Gatlinburg, so once you visit with the scarecrows make sure to spend a bit of time exploring the city. It's a true Tennessee gem!
