Few People Know About This Fossil Cave Hiding Right Here In Tennessee
Tennessee limestone is ripe for the creation of caves and caverns, and the Cumberland plateau is absolutely full of them. This particular cave, just outside of McMinnville, is known across the state for its underground bluegrass concert series, but few Tennesseans know that it’s also a perfect spot to find some of the most ancient and fascinating fossils in the state. Cumberland Caverns is one of the longest caves in the state, boasting over 32 miles of underground passageways.

The opening of the cave looks super ominous, but what else do you expect from a cave? Tours are available year-round, and they offer a little something for everybody.

The cave was originally discovered in 1810, but exploration has happened sporadically ever since. The cave's famous Volcano Room, where the Bluegrass Underground concert series is held, wasn't discovered until the 1860s.

Different kinds of fossils can be seen in the walls for those looking with a discerning eye. You can even find fossils of old plants, coral, and shark teeth!

In the cave, you never know what you'll find. But if you enter the famous Volcano Room, you'll be sure to notice the large chandelier hanging from the ceiling of the cavern.

There are plenty of other interesting rock formations that you can see in the cave as well. The caverns offer tours ranging from simple walking tours to extreme, tight-quarters, overnight tours.
