Most folks don’t know that one of the largest and most beautiful sunflower fields in the state of Tennessee is hiding on the eastern side of Knoxville. Located in the Forks of the Wildlife Management Area, this expansive field is replanted every other year and has become a must-visit spot for both locals and out-of-towners seeking a little bit of beauty in the heat of summer. The Forks of the River Wildlife Area is located in Knoxville, Tennessee, and is known for hosting one of the largest sunflower fields in the American south.
The beautiful, 70-acre sunflower fields are planted every other year by the TWRA. They're surrounded by a gorgeous, diverse terrain made up of hardwood forests and old fields.
Keep an eye out for wildlife and songbirds in the area as well! There are multiple trails throughout the area including the South Loop trails as well as the Ijams Quarry Trails.
The sunflower fields bloom every odd-numbered year during the month of July, and it's come to be one of the most popular spots for visitors to take photos and their little ones.
The Forks of the River Wildlife Area is actually one of the seven areas protected and considered the Urban Wilderness in South Knoxville. It's between the Holston and French Broad Rivers which is where it gets its name.
This is the largest number of sunflowers you'll see in one place here in Knoxville, and it's easy to visit the Ijams Nature Center after your jaunt through the blooms. Looking to cool off? Jump in the Tennessee River just down the road!
