My name is Chris Dodge and I live right here in the great state of Tennessee. My family and I are full adventurers filled with passion to see the amazing things our state has to offer. We are avid hikers and have explored many different places in Tennessee and beyond but we are always thankful to be living in such a glorious state.
Two of my favorite things to do during the fall are visiting farms and going on scenic drives. So one Saturday, we decided to do both — a scenic fall drive in Tennessee that took us past dozens (and dozens!) of farms. The route took us through rolling farmlands, two lakes, a rock tunnel, two charming country towns, and a notorious windy road through the mountains. Here is how we set up our trip — follow along for a great fall drive… just don’t forget to bring along your favorite road trip snacks!
We started our drive at one of our favorite places in Tennessee, Watauga Lake.
After admiring the scenery and having a picnic, we took off towards Mountain City. Passing many farms, we soon arrived in a quaint little town filled with fall colors and oodles of country charm.
From there, we entered a notorious road that is very popular with motorcyclists called The Snake.
We took a quick stop at the Shady Valley Country Store where their smoker was cooking up some succulent BBQ and the place was abuzz with motorcyclists and families enjoying this beautiful fall day.
You can actually hike on top of the tunnel, and we climbed the stairs and followed the short trail to the top.
Once above the tunnel, you can get a great view of the road going through it. This unique experience was only enhanced by the fiery array of colors of the changing leaves all around us!
Once again we found ourselves surrounded by a changing forest and beautiful fall colors. The second half of the road was just like the first, with lots hairpin turns and ess curves.
Once the road straightened out, we knew we left the Snake behind us and found ourselves at South Holston Lake.
We arrived right as the sun was setting over the distant mountains and illuminating this beautiful lake. It seemed like a fitting end to the day spent enjoying our beautiful countryside.
I encourage those who are looking to enjoy the leaves to take this scenic fall drive in Tennessee. Make sure to check out these other scenic drives in Tennessee for some great road trip ideas. You can also watch our journey with this Adventuring in the Moment video.
