Have you ever been stuck inside fulfilling obligations while the sun shines and you just long to get outside? I have been there many times living vicariously through the people casually walking by and enjoying the warmth. When I finally get to bust open the doors to sweet freedom I want to go for a long walk and there is no better place than the Tweetsie Trail in Johnson City Tennessee. This scenic trail gives plenty of time to enjoy the great outdoors.
The Tweetsie Trail has a couple of entry points throughout the path but the official trailhead is in Johnson City then leads to the neighboring town of Elizabethton. This is a rail-to-trail project that made use of a retired railroad system. The name comes from the whistle that sounds from the old engines making the classic “tweet” sound.
The Tweetsie Trail can be done as an out-and-back trail or a point-to-point trail. One way the trail is nearly ten miles long giving you plenty of time to stroll, bike, or jog this popular trail. Make sure you download the AllTrails app to track your progress along your journey.

Along the way, there are plenty of points of interest like the pedestrian bridge that spans across the highway. Which allows for uninterrupted enjoyment of the trail as one continuous trek.
As you traverse through towering rock walls and tunnels of greenery there will be plenty of nature to view. Perhaps the prettiest view is the quarry overlook which is a great place to take a quick break. Soak in the scenery before you continue.
For those history buffs, there are also dozens of interpretive signs that showcase the previous railroad and events of the past. The replica of the Milligan Depot is a nice place to snap a quick picture and appreciate this nod to the railroad history. Another must-see place visible from the trail is the Sabine Hill State Historic Site. This building was built in the early 1800s and stands as one of the finer examples of a wood-framed federal structure.
