Greeneville was first established way back in 1786 but the land had many uses before that.
As pioneers started settling west of North Carolina, an expanse of land was explored which later became known as Tennessee. Efforts were made early on to establish this new territory as its own state which was called the State of Franklin. The name was made to honor Benjamin Franklin. It was short-lived, however, but not before both Jonesborough and Greeneville served as the state's capital city. (Pictured above is a replica of that original capitol building.)
Greeneville saw a lot of history over the years, from early Native Americans to the political start of our 17th President Andrew Johnson.
