Georgia is known for their peaches and California for their rolling fields of – well, everything – but what about Tennessee? It’s not just cotton and tobacco in the Volunteer State! As the summer temps start to climb and our palates begin to crave the sweet taste of stone fruit, Tennesseans flock to pick-your-own fruit farms around the state. Since we’re in love with the fruit of our Georgia neighbor, we decided to head out to pick peaches for the day. We finished our evening out with a homemade peach cobbler, but what would YOU do with your fruit after a day at Forgie’s Fruit Farm?
Lewisburg, Tennessee is located roughly an hour outside of Nashville in the heat of the mid-state. The beautiful and lush landscape provides a perfect backdrop for a farm visit, whether you have kiddos in tow or are looking for a fun outdoor date activity.
Forgie's Fruit Farm operates as a pick-your-own fruit or we-fetch farm. Their peach orchard has grown from 350 trees in 1994 to over 850 peach trees and 500 sweet cherry trees in 2018. There are seven different peach varieties and six cherry varieties spread throughout the orchard.
The fun, family-friendly atmosphere has given Forgie's Fruit a solid boost of online reviews in recent years. Families rave about the relaxed outdoor opportunity for kids to pick their own fruit, and the employees that even help visitors learn how to pick the "perfect peach." Every customer is given a mini lesson, depending on how you're looking to use your peaches.
There is a difference between peaches used for baking, preserving and eaten fresh. Forgie's wants to make sure you not only reap the benefits of your labor, but that you understand the gravitas of your peach decisions and take home the best fruit for your needs.
It's a unique learning experience when you figure the difference between a Loring peach and a Red Haven peach. Take it from us - it's a bit of knowledge you'll carry with you for a long, long time.
Hungry after all that work? Stay for lunch! Forgie's kitchen offers everything from bbq sandwiches and hot dogs to the ever-necessary homemade peach cobbler and cheesecake. Fresh corn and watermelon are served straight from the garden, making this one of the best farm-to-table meals in the Tennessee countryside.
One of the neatest things about Forgie's are the sweet cherry orchards that stretch out across the rolling hills. Cherries aren't native to Tennessee, and are therefore fairly difficult to grow down here in the south. Still, with a whole lot of heart and determination, this Tennessee fruit farm proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they could grow sweet cherries in abundance. It's a true testament to the farming dedication this down home space comes by so naturally.
Will you be headed to Forgie's this year? Are you looking for some fresh peaches and cherries to use in your home? Make sure to check their website for ripe peach and cherry seasons, and join their email list for semi-annual updates. Forgie's Fruit Farm is located at 2000 Collier Road in Lewisburg, Tennessee - we'll meet you there!
If you’re looking to buy a pie as opposed to making one in that toasty summer kitchen of yours, you may want to check out this historic restaurant just outside of Nashville. Their desserts are dreamy!
