There’s nothing more beautiful than a Tennessee mountain view. Sure, there are stunning places all over the world, but the eastern edge of the Volunteer State is rife with both beauty and nostalgia. Tennessee is consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful states in the nation, and the Cherokee National Forest might have something to do with it.
The national forest stretches 655,598 acres in total and merges with forest land in both North Carolina and Georgia. If you’re looking for a way to experience the beauty of the forest without the rugged hiking requirement, then you definitely need to check out the Chilhowee Overlooks.
If you take a 7-mile drive up Chilhowee Mountain in the Cherokee National Forest, then you're bound to find your way to the Chilhowee Recreation Area. It's tucked away high in the mountains and provides a view like no other.
Here, you can see the view from a vehicle along the road. The Chilhowee Recreation Area features three overlooks, each of which is visible from your vehicle.
You'll want to take US-64 East to Forest Service Road #77, then you'll simply follow signs to the Chilhowee Recreation Area. There are pullouts along the road that are perfect for photo opportunities.
If you're looking to experience the forest on foot, the recreation area offers hiking, swimming, biking, and camping opportunities. It's not far from the cities of Cleveland, Benton, and Ocoee, so shopping excursions and dine-in restaurants are just a few minutes away.
Those views though. Most folks head to the Great Smoky Mountains for a beautiful visual experience, but the Cherokee National Forest has a few tricks up its sleeve. Did you know that it's the largest tract of public land in the state? It's true!
