There’s hardly anything more American than a good burger, bursting with cheese and an armful of french fries on the side. It’s a classic, an American must-try if you’re traveling internationally and a down home favorite to each of our fifty states. Whether you’re a Tennessee native yourself or are here for a visit, one of these fantastic eateries are sure to whet your whistle with a weeks worth of sodium and a torrent of delicious calories. Each one is well worth splitting that diet for, friends. Did your favorite local spot make the list?
Hog & Hominy was honored a handful of years ago by
Food & Wine, naming their fabulous John T. Burger as one of the best in the United States. The Zagat rated restaurant has continued to grow its reputation and dedicated following with a busy lunch and dinner scene and ever-expanding and creative menu. (707 W Brookhaven Circle)
This true down-home eatery is lauded by locals for their fantastic food and the kindly service and hospitality exemplified by the employees. Whether you're in search of a burger with bacon and a basket of fries or even a chili dog or plate of catfish, you won't leave disappointed. (1004 N Washington Avenue)
Gabby's is somewhat of an institution in Nashville, splitting locals into two categories: those who have been and those who have not. There's hardly a single person that leaves unhappy, although you may be asked to vacate your spot once you finish your burger - the restaurant is tiny, which means turnover is quick. Get in, eat up, and head on out fat and happy. (493 Humphreys Street)
Stock & Barrel may not look like much from the front, but this Market Square favorite has been published over and over in response to local fanfare and reputation. The Farmhouse burger is a great one to cut your teeth on, but no worries - there are twenty different burgers to choose from. (35 Market Square)
Urban Stack is THE PLACE to snag a burger if you're in Tennessee's southern city. The restaurant boasts a massive menu that's chock full of creative burgers, offset by a wood-inspired interior. What a cozy local spot to indulge! (12 W 13th Street)
Okay, before we dive into Bell's Burger Basket, we need to note: these burgers are HUGE. Seriously. If you can finish one we're sending you a virtual high-five from here to there, because that's something to be proud of. This local dive offers everything from mac 'n cheese to fried chicken and the famed cheeseburger. 10/10, we would recommend! (12821 Highway 79, High Street)
Honey's is such a fun and family-friendly spot tucked in the heart of Fayetteville. The service is quick and the atmosphere is quaint, so your heart will feel just as full as your stomach. Honey's Restaurant has been around since 1923, so they know how to serve a meal right! (109 Market St E)
This new Nashville eatery opened up on Charlotte Avenue in the old Porter Road Butcher space. Designed to reflect a 1950's diner, this is as much a meal as it is an experience in the heart of Music City. Although a chain, we'd still recommend taking a step back in time with a milkshake and a burger when you're on the west side of town. (4816 Charlotte Avenue)
Ah, Huey's. It's difficult to find a Tennessee burger list without this iconic Memphis spot snug atop it. They serve a World Famous Huey Burger, which is a 1/3 pound burger that boasts a secret Huey seasoning and is available in multiple spots around the city. It's up to you to find your neighborhood Huey's, but we promise it's well worth the hunt. (Various Locations)
