Some of the most beautiful views in Tennessee can be found on the eastern side of the state along the National Scenic Byway known as the Cherohala Skyway. The road was completed in 1996 and is shared by both Tennessee and North Carolina. It remains one of the most photographed and traversed roads by nature lovers in the greater area. Learn more about it below, and plan your own trip! You can pop over state lines AND experience some of the most beautiful natural views in the area.
The Cherohala Skyway stretches 43 miles from Tellico Plains, Tennessee to Robbinsville, North Carolina. It's a National Scenic Byway as well as a National Forest Scenic Byway.
It's a popular road to drive, especially if you're looking to take a couple of stunning photographs along the way. There are plenty of pull-outs and opportunities to get out and stretch your legs while taking in the beauty of the area.
We'd recommend visiting during the warmer months or autumn unless you plan ahead for the chill of winter. The roads can get a bit icy, so just pay attention while you make your way from state to state.
Driving the Cherohala Skyway will make you feel as if you've left civilization solidly behind. Your view will stretch for miles without a house or store in sight.
Have you heard of the Cherohala Skyway? Will you be visiting for yourself? Keep in mind that if you do decide to drive the road for yourself, there aren't many restrooms along the route. Make sure to stay diligent on the road and enjoy the view!
