You probably don’t think of scuba diving when it comes to Tennessee day trips – at least, not immediately. Our land-locked state is known for hiking and rivers, our clean lakes and gorgeous cities. But scuba diving? We leave it to the coastal states.
We USED to, that is.
We were hunting around Athens, Tennessee and came across the wildly unique Loch Low-Minn Scuba Diving Resort and had to take a deeper look. No need to book plane tickets to the Caribbean, folks. We have you covered.
Loch Low-Minn is located in Athens, Tennessee, and it's a crystal-clear quarry lake that has been turned into a once in a lifetime Volunteer State scuba diving experience.
The quarry lake is ten acres, and chock full of prehistoric paddlefish. They're an extraordinary species that's continuously difficult to find, but you can spend a whole afternoon with the fish that knew the dinosaurs if you come to dive.
Great for groups, after signing the correct safety waivers and going through the proper training, you'll be able to hop in the water and explore the quarry bottom. The team at Loch Low-Minn has stocked the water floor with all sorts of artifacts, so you never know what you just might run into.
Picnic tables are scattered across the property, so you won't have to worry about meals. Make sure you pack something yummy, because you're bound to work up an appetite!
The lake is home to all sorts of fish besides the prehistoric paddlefish, including catfish, bass, and bluegill. A dive will most often provide a 35-foot line of visibility, so you'll be getting up close and personal with your fishy friends.
The quarry is open by request during the week as well as every weekend, so it won't be hard to find a time that works for you and your buddies. The inital entry fee is $20, with added fees for air and nitrox fills. The military discount is 10% for those who have served, as well. We'll see you in the water!
