I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
About an hour north of Los Angeles is an explore-worthy gem hidden in plain sight. Tucked in a suburban area, this former ranch is named after the first cowboy movie star of the silent film era, William S. Hart, who owned and occupied the property. This underrated space holds a special place in my heart and fond memories of my grandparents bringing me here as a child. I even had my photo taken by a reporter while feeding a horse at the park. I thought this place was enchanting then and not much has changed. Beautifully preserved and maintained, Hart Park in Santa Clarita, CA is full of natural beauty, hiking trails, and furry animals. Check it out!
William Hart’s mansion sits in stately solitude on a hill at the top of the park. It is actually a museum but is unfortunately closed until further notice. Still, visitors can walk up to and around it, gaining a sense of what it was like to live here.
There are several other structures on the property, including a bunkhouse, a tiny chapel, a barn, a small watchtower, and a “Trading Post” gift shop, making the park so fun to explore.
There are wide grassy and shaded areas with picnic tables and barbecue grills. The lawns are often used for a variety of community and cultural events.
The on-site barnyard is always a family favorite, offering close-up encounters with cute alpacas, pigs, chickens, turkeys, horses, donkeys, and deer. You can even purchase food for a hands-on experience at the Trading Post.
Several trails lead off throughout the park and give visitors a chance to see the unexpected - a roaming herd of bison. The main Hart Trail is a loop of just under two miles.
The original herd was a gift from Walt Disney in 1962. The bison are contained on the property but roam free through the hills of the park’s 265 acres.
From the house at the top of the hill and various points along the hiking trails, the park offers expansive views of the Santa Clarita Valley. Benches are thoughtfully placed in several spots so you can stop and take it all in.
You will find a variety of landscapes throughout the property, from tropical palms and evergreens to desert plants, cactus, and rock gardens. There is so much space to wander and enjoy whatever season we happen to be in.
William S. Hart Park is definitely underrated in my opinion. It is a splendid place to escape into nature, enjoy a sense of history, and see some amazing wildlife.
