I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.
When it comes to California’s wine regions, most non-California natives are only familiar with the wine country in the northern portion of the state. However, Southern California has some amazing wine producers of its own. Temecula Valley is home to a wonderful wine trail with beautiful vineyards, unique wineries, and renowned winemakers. One such hidden gem is the first and only underground wine cave In Southern California.
Oak Mountain Winery - a family-owned winery on the De Portola Wine Trail - produces over 30 award-winning wines, but it is best known for its strawberry and raspberry champagnes. Oh, and its wine cave!
The mined wine cave sits 104 feet below the surface. Not only does this allow use of the land above to cultivate grapevines, but it provides optimal conditions for aging Oak Mountain's flavorful wines, thanks to geothermal technology and the ability to precisely maintain the ideal temperature and humidity.
Cave wine tasting tours are available daily by reservation only. Tour the caves, learn about the history of Oak Mountain and its wine processes, sample a variety of wines, then enjoy a meat and cheese pairing to complete your experience.
Visit the winery Monday through Friday and you can indulge in wine tasting right inside the cave. Weekend wine tasting is offered above ground in the main tasting room or on the pavilion.
Have a seat at Cave Cafe for a delicious meal, with menu options like Chimichuri Steak Fries, Street Corn Flatbread, Cubano Panini, and Caramel Apple and Walnut Cheesecake.
Guests love the tacos at Cave Cafe. Not only can you choose from a variety of meat and seafood fillings, but the cafe also offers gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan taco options.
